📜 The myth of the Holly King and the Oak King tells of two nature spirits who rule the seasons by taking turns in power: the Oak King rules the light half of the year, from winter to summer, when the days grow longer, and the Holly King rules the dark half, from summer to winter, when the days grow shorter. Twice a year—at the winter and summer solstices—they symbolically “battle,” and the one whose season is beginning wins, ensuring the cycle of the seasons continues.
