Severe cyclonic storm Cyclone Montha is barreling toward India’s east coast, prompting red alerts in coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, and triggering mass evacuations, travel disruptions and emergency response activation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports the storm will make landfall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam tonight, with sustained winds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h. Coastal sea conditions are expected to worsen with waves reaching 2-4 metres.

In Andhra Pradesh, authorities have shut schools, cancelled flights, cancelled trains and initiated large-scale evacuations from low-lying vulnerable villages, preparing 1,900+ relief camps and mobilising NDRF/SDRF teams. In Odisha’s southern districts, including Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada and Malkangiri, red alerts and evacuations are underway for tens of thousands of residents. The heavy rainfall, gale-force winds and rough seas pose an imminent threat to life, property, crops and infrastructure across the east coast.
