After being absent in 2024, the New York Transit Museum once again hosted their annual "Parade of Trains." The event consists of train rides on vintage and historic train cars from the NYC Subway's bygone era. The NYTM operated the legendary subway cars on the BMT Brighton Line, which now hosts the modern day B & Q trains. Featured in the event were the BMT Standard Cars, the Train of Many Metals, the BU Gate Cars, and the R-1/9s which did not operate.
The BMT Standard Cars were constructed by the American Car and Foundry Company and Pressed Steel Car Company between 1919 and 1925 for the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation. These cars were a major advancement in subway history, featuring steel constructed wide car bodies, which served on many of the BMT's elevated lines. Cars 2390, 2391 and 2392 were restored to operation in 2015 and are the only 3 operating among 5 survivors.
The Train of Many Metals consists of a handful of different subway cars, lashed together to form a single train set. Among these are R-10 cars 3189 and 3184, which introduced low alloy high tensile steel construction and dynamic brakes to the system. Also included are R-32 cars 3360 and 3361, nicknamed "Brightliners" for their stainless steel exteriors, as well as R-16 car 6387, painted in the classic BMT Pullman Green colors. Lastly, is R-11 car 8013, one of only ten built for the famed "Million Dollar Train."
The BU Open Gate cars are the oldest operational cars in the NYTM fleet, with Car 1273 built in 1903–1904, and Cars 1404 and 1407 built in 1908, respectively. These cars were designed with open platforms at each end of the car, and a trainman, situated between each pair of cars, was assigned to open or close these gates when passengers boarded or alighted the train. These cars were constructed for the Brooklyn Union Elevated Railroad, which was operated by the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. When the BRT went defunct, it was absorbed into the BMT.
