On this drive in the American South we take a scenic route near Congaree National Park in the Midlands of South Carolina. We begin on this dirt spur, Drayton Head Rd., making a right and headed southeast on Hickory Hill Rd. Before we get to Wateree we swing back northwest along Toms Creek to Hopkins.
Following the Civil War, newly freed men and women purchased land from the South Carolina Land Commission in Hopkins, and a community grew on the swampy outskirts of the state capital.
