have to pass urine 10 to 12 times per day and many times even in the night I have to get up every one hour to visit the toilet this disturbs my sleep and also my routine activities. What should I
do? What is the cause? Now this condition is called overactive bladder. Overactive bladder is when the bladder contracts even when the quantity of urine in the bladder is very little. Overactive bladder could be because of various reasons. It could be because of infection, it could be because of some stone it could be because of neurological condition and sometimes even when the capacity of the bladder is small. This results in frequent passage of urine. now I’ll be talking of a small capacity bladder normally the urinary bladder can store urine up to 350 to 400 cc after which we feel the urge to pass you in. In small capacity bladder even when the bladder is 50 cc 100 cc or even 150 cc we get the urge to pass urine and if we do not visit the toilet that results in urgency and pain and sometimes even the leakage of urine. What are the causes of small capacity bladder ? The most common cause is infection and of these infections in our country tuberculosis is the most common. We all think tuberculosis affects only the lung but tuberculosis can affect any part of the body including the urinary bladder . This results in the shrinkage of the bladder and the bladder sometimes becomes less than 50 cc in capacity the person affected by small capacity bladder will have to visit the toilet as 30 to 40 times per day and in the night. When infections result in small capacity bladder the diagnosis is straightforward we do an ultrasound and we do some x-ray studies called MCU to diagnose a small capacity bladder . The treatment for small capacity bladder is to find the cause and treat it, for example if it is because of tuberculosis treatment for tuberculosis is started and the capacity of the bladder is increased by medical and surgical techniques. In medical methods in case the bladder capacity is not too small and it is just an over activity some drugs are available which will decrease the frequency of urine. However if the bladder capacity is too small and medical treatment fails, then there are various surgeries which increase the size of the bladder and give relief to the patient.
