Описание: President Droupadi Murmu presented India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, to Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla at the 77th Republic Day parade. Shukla, a fighter pilot and astronaut, earned the honour for his “conspicuous bravery” and “exemplary courage” while piloting the historic Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2025.

He became the first Indian on the ISS since 1984, serving 18 days alongside a multinational crew led by Peggy Whitson. Shukla piloted the SpaceX Dragon “Grace,” managing complex orbital operations in microgravity, a high-risk mission where a single error could have had catastrophic consequences. As ISRO’s sole representative, he demonstrated remarkable skill and courage throughout the mission.

Traditionally awarded to soldiers for bravery in battle, the Ashoka Chakra has been conferred on only one other Indian astronaut: Captain Rakesh Sharma, who received it in 1985 as the first Indian to travel to space. Shukla now becomes the second Indian astronaut to receive the country’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
