Super Mario 64 (スーパーマリオ64 Sūpā Mario Rokujūyon ? ) , popularly known as Mario 64 or simply SM64 , is a video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in Japan on June 23, 1996, and later in North America and Europe in 1997.
Super Mario 64 is the first three-dimensional (3D) video game in the Super Mario series , and it established a new archetype for the genre in its predecessors, just as Super Mario Bros. did for two-dimensional (2D) platform video games in 1983. Hailed as "revolutionary," the video game left a lasting impression on 3D design in video games, especially notable for its use of a dynamic camera system and the execution of its analog control.
