Rain-in-the-Face was a central Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux leader and warrior in the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, which resulted in the loss of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry Regiment. He was famous for his bravery and strength in battle. It was also thought he carried a profound personal grudge against Custer, who he claimed had killed his brother and sister in a previous clash.
Some accounts propose Rain-in-the-Face was among the fighters who attacked Custer's unit during the engagement and possibly landed the killing blow that ended Custer. This claim, nevertheless, is disputed by scholars, and the exact circumstances of Custer's death remain unclear. Rain-in-the-Face ultimately surrendered to U.S. forces and served a prison sentence.
After his release,he became an advocate for Native American rights and a famous performer in Wild West shows, where he would recount his wartime exploits. I was a perilous man before I had to walk with crutches. My heart is gentle now, but it was brutal when I was a warrior and a hunter. The women were fond of me, but the men were scared of me.
