At Easington Colliery, the pit cage once carried generations of miners underground, powering Britain’s industry from the coal seams of County Durham.
On 29th May 1951, tragedy struck when an underground explosion claimed the lives of 83 men and two rescue workers. It remains one of the darkest days in the region’s mining history.
Captured by drone, this reel shows the pit cage as it stands today – a silent memorial to the miners who worked, sacrificed, and lost their lives beneath this ground.
