HS2’s 30-acre logistics hub at Willesden has now opened, located on the former Euro Terminal site in North West London. Operated by HS2’s construction partner Skanska, Costain and STRABAG joint venture (SCS JV), it will welcome up to eight freight trains a day during peak construction, becoming the beating heart of the logistics operation for HS2 in London. Trains will haul a total volume of 5.6 million tonnes from the Euston approaches, including excavated material from tunnel boring machines – saving the equivalent of up to one million lorry movements.
Marking the site’s official opening on 14 September 2021, GB Railfreight rebranded a Class 66 locomotive (66796) with a bespoke HS2 design that highlights the benefits of delivering materials to and from the project’s construction sites by rail rather than road. The locomotive was named ‘The Green Progressor’ by 15-year-old HS2 superfan, Jermaine from Leeds. A special surprise on the day, organised by GB Railfreight and SCS JV, also saw a Class 08 (08703) shunting locomotive named after the teenager.
