I wanted to improve my English and Urdu vocabulary, along with my ability to speak well in both languages. So my mother asked me to read books. I was never a good reader or someone who enjoyed studying. I have had severe ADHD since childhood, so except for the Qur’an, I never really studied any other book by choice.

I always had to struggle. I would read a page and reread it almost ten times just to understand what the topic was about. Later in life, I realized that certain themes captured my imagination, so I picked up horror and mature themes, not in the sense of Fifty Shades of Grey, but more along the lines of Manto, spicy stories with deep moral lessons.

Gradually, I began to read more, and eventually I started writing as well. Today, I am able to write very creative horror stories. I do not write adult stories yet, and possibly I won’t anytime soon either :)

My love for reading drew me closer to art, literature, and songs from the 80s, 90s, and even earlier eras, largely because of my father’s love for that music and my closeness to him. Whenever my father listened to or sang those songs, I would sit and listen.

My friend Shamshad Bhai sings beautifully, and my Abujan always enjoyed listening to him whenever he visited our home. One cold winter night, I asked Shamshad Bhai to do a duet with me, and that duet was loved by my father.

In this podcast, Shamshad Bhai and I relive our 12-year-old duet and the memories of our elders, along with the literature and art that we both cherish deeply.
