Studio Two, EMI Studios, London - February 16, 1965
The second recording session from 1965, two sessions took place on this day: one in the afternoon (2.30 – 5.45 PM) & an evening session (7.00 – 10.30 PM). During the afternoon session, work on both “I Need You” and “Another Girl” continued after having recorded the rhythm tracks and some overdubs the previous day. The original multitrack tape for “I Need You” consisted of the rhythm track on track one, guide vocals on track two (which was later wiped), George’s first vocal overdub with Paul occasionally singing on track three and yet another vocal track plus some cowbell played by Ringo on track four. During this session, track four was wiped and replaced by George’s new lead vocal overdub along with harmonies by John and Paul. Track two was then overdubbed again featuring more harmony vocals, cowbell and George’s Rickenbacker 12-string guitar played utilizing a foot pedal. After this, “Another Girl” was completed after having recording most of the track the previous day. The four-track tape this time consisted of bass and drums on track one, John’s Fender and George’s Jumbo Gibson guitar on track two (later wiped), Paul’s lead vocals on track three and more vocals by John & Paul, George’s Gretsch guitar and tom-toms played by Ringo on track four. The song was completed when track two was overdubbed again with Paul’s lead guitar, John’s Fender and George’s Jumbo Gibson.
The evening session was solely spent on starting and completing “Yes It Is”. The initial rhythm track consisted of bass, drums and Spanish guitar on track one and George’s Gretsch played using a foot pedal on track two. During most of the takes attempted, John barely sang a guide vocal, most of the time either whispering the vocals or just messing around. The last take attempted, ‘14’, was deemed best and overdubs then followed. Harmony vocals by John, Paul & George were recorded on track three and track four was filled with John’s double tracked lead vocals, cymbals played by Paul, more foot pedal guitar passages, and Hammond organ played by George Martin, although it’s not noticeable throughout the song or it was later removed during the mixing session.
All the multitrack & instrumentation info was taken by George Martin's personal notes written during the sessions. A composite mix between take 2 and the original song was included on Anthology 2.
