Muroran is the capital city of Iburi Subprefecture and has a population of about 93,000.
Muroran has long flourished as an industrial city centered on the steel industry, but with the decline of the steel industry, its population is also decreasing.
The center of Muroran is moving from Muroran Station to East Muroran Station in the east.
