On June first, 1946, inside Jilava Prison just outside Bucharest, Romania’s wartime leader Ion Antonescu stood before a firing squad. Once the most powerful man in Romania, he now faced execution after being convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Under Antonescu’s leadership, Romanian forces fought alongside German troops during Operation Barbarossa, pushing deep into Soviet territory. But his regime also became responsible for brutal policies in occupied regions, including mass deportations and killings of Jews and Roma across areas such as Transnistria.
At first, Antonescu’s gamble appeared to restore Romania’s lost pride. But the catastrophic defeat of Romanian armies during the Battle of Stalingrad shattered the illusion of victory. As the war turned against the Axis, Romania faced devastation, mounting casualties, and the looming advance of the Soviet Union.
In August 1944, Michael I of Romania carried out a dramatic coup, arresting Antonescu and switching Romania to the Allied side of the war. The move ended Antonescu’s dictatorship overnight—but it did not erase the consequences of his rule.
After the war, Antonescu was tried by the People’s Tribunal in Bucharest. The trial was political, symbolic, and historic. The verdict: death by firing squad.
This video tells the story of Antonescu’s rise from professional soldier to dictator, the decisions that tied Romania’s fate to Nazi Germany, and the final morning when his rule ended in the prison courtyard at Jilava.
