JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new contract for Johnstown police officers has been approved, promising a significant pay raise for the city's law enforcement personnel.
Johnstown Police Chief Mark Britton announced that the contract, which had been under negotiation for about 10 months, was finalized at Tuesday's city council meeting, coinciding with his appointment as chief of police.
Britton explained that the starting salary for Johnstown police officers was previously about $10,000 less than comparable departments.
With the new contract, the gap has narrowed to approximately $2,000, with starting salaries now at about $56,000 a year.
Britton described the contract as "long overdue" and expressed optimism that it would attract more officers to the department. He anticipates reaching the city-budgeted number of 37 officers by the end of the year.
