This time I'm heading out to Loch Maree which is one of the largest and most beautiful lochs in Scotland. It contains over 50 islands one of which has a long ancient history with many graves and tales called Isle Maree.
My journey began and ended in Poolewe where the river coming out of Loch Maree meets the sea. I have decided to go up through what is called the Great Scottish Wilderness. It is a mountainous area that is considered one of the last real wilderness in all of Europe. Then I have crossed a mountain pass the has lead me to some amazing views of Loch Maree with all its Isles. Then I descended down into one of the most beautiful Oak forests that truly felt untouched by people. When I set up camp at night I would hear lots of Owls and the stars were some of the brightest I've ever seen since there is no light pollution whatsoever. The next morning I decided to swim to Isle Maree from the north side of the Loch which wasn't a big distance at all and the water was warm.
Isle Maree is a sacred and a holy place that dates back thousands of years where Druids used to perform Celtic rituals and people would come to the isle searching for a cure for insanity. It has a ancient graveyard that even has Viking graves with a sad story. The Vikings used to carry their boats up the river into Loch Maree. The isle also has a sacred money tree and a long lost well. Walking on this island felt quite amazing knowing it has such powerful history.
After swimming back from the isle I decided to take the 'inaccessible' route instead of walking back the same way I came from. I had to scramble some cliffs along the loch, carry my backpack up above my head while crossing the water and it was a real challenging adventure that I definitely do not recommend as it could of went wrong in so many ways. After struggling this half a mile section for over 4 hours I finally made it back to a track and spent another night by the river before going back to civilization the next morning.
This adventure was beautiful and very challenging. It felt like I was truly in the wild and after exploring Scotland for over 2 years I must say that Loch Maree is definitely the most beautiful of them all.
