I can see the smoke from here.
That's the first thing I need to say, the first thing that matters now that I'm stuck up here with no way down and no way to know if help is even coming. The smoke rises in columns from the valley below, thick and dark against the afternoon sky, and I keep telling myself it's just forest fires. Just the normal fires I'm supposed to be watching for, supposed to be reporting. But I know better. I've known better for three days now, ever since the radio went from emergency broadcasts to static to nothing at all.
