"I Teach Better Healthcare"
Ross Upshur's research looks at how we treat complex health problems. In the past, the focus of treatment has been on one disease, and one treatment. But what happens if a patient has many conditions that require attention? Ross is working to change the way we think about illness in Ontario in order to improve the healthcare we all depend on.
In addition to being a practicing doctor, Ross is the Director of the Primary Care Research Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital, and recently completed a term as Director of the University of Toronto's Joint Centre for Bioethics. He also has a Master's degree in Philosophy.
He recognizes that in order to improve health outcomes for all patients in Ontario, he needs to connect his research with his teaching. In his classroom, he encourages students to integrate research into their careers, in order to improve their ability to observe, to diagnose, and to fill the gaps in current medical knowledge.
For Ross, you can't have good teaching without good research. As he notes, "Research informs virtually every aspect of my teaching, just as teaching informs virtually every aspect of my research."
