Medicare Choices Made Easy
Medicare is a cooperative medical care program by the federal government. The states of California and Oregon have a great Medicare supplement plan rule, also known as Birthday rule, that allows its members to switch to a different insurance plan/provider around their birthday. Medicare supplement policy, also known as Medigap, helps cover the gaps in insurance that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) do not include.
Birthday Rule:
The time limit for following the "Birthday Rule” is 30 days from your birthday.
However, in the 30 days leading up to your birthday, you can apply again.
So, you do get a total of 61 days to follow the Birthday Rule.
If you are participating in an Original Medicare program, Medicare will first pay its share of the health care costs accepted by Medicare.
The supplemental insurance policy then comes in, paying out the remaining portion covered by the program.
The California and Oregon Birthday Rule Features
If you sign up for a contract, every year after your birthday, you can check your agreement to see if any plans are accessible at a lower cost.
This law gives California and Oregon residents the option to change their Medigap plans without the need for a professional underwriting, meaning you won't have to answer any health-related questions.
When taking full advantage of the Birthday Policy, there is one essential principle to remember that the states of California and Oregon specify the new law must have the same or reduced advantages as the previous policy. Insurance firms in these states will provide the same benefits for the Medicare Supplement program, but each insurance company demands different prices for the same package.
How to Change Plans?
You can switch to another plan as long as it is equal to a lower level of coverage.
If you have one of the higher-level plans, you can choose almost any plan with any company.
If you have a lower level plan, then you have to stay with the same standard plan or choose one that has lower coverage than yours.
You may apply for 30 days before or after your birthday or anniversary month to adjust your Medigap prescription. If you apply on Feb 24, then Mar 1 will be the effective date.
Insurers can adjust the effective date according to the consumers so that they do not have two active policies at the same time. This means that in some cases, the policy start date is more than 30 days from the date of application. Effective dates that come in mid of the month are discouraged, as applicants have to give their prior carrier notice.
It is not recommended to cancel the current Medigap policy until a new Medigap policy is issued to you. You will possibly have to pay two premiums for one month for a smooth transfer from the old to the new policy. There is no time limit given about when you can change, but if you try to change without using the "birthday rule," you will have to be medically qualified.
