I really like this one. Its an interesting twist on a possession exercise that I had never seen or considered before. It is a 7v7 possession exercise but with 3 different grids: 1 main grid with 10 players (5v5) and two ‘endzones’. In each endzone there is a player from each team (1v1).
The object of the exercise is for the attacking team in the main grid to keep possession while attempting to get the ball to their player in either endzone while he is marked. This forces the attacking player in the 1v1 situation to work hard to create space between himself and his defender in order to receive the ball. He must then attempt to get the ball back to his team without being dispossessed the defender.
This a great exercise to help forwards work on checking to the ball at the appropriate time and get comfortable receiving the ball while under pressure. I also like that once the forward has the ball he may find himself in 1v1 dribbling situation to dispose of the defender which provides added value to the exercise for both players.
TRAINING AREA: The training area dimensions (see image: https://imgur.com/rg7Z9fL) are as follows: There are three sections: the main grid and two endzones. The main grid is approximately 40 yards wide (the width of the 18 yard box for this particular field at Bayern Munich’s Saebener Strasse training complex) and about 17 yards deep. The endzones are basically trapezoids with the wide side (40 yards) aligned with the main grid. The narrow side is 8 yards wide. The endzones are 18 yards deep.
