🛡️ Innate Immunity – The Body’s First Line of Defense
Innate immunity is the body’s immediate and non-specific defense system against invading pathogens. It acts within minutes to hours after exposure and does not require previous contact with the microorganism.
This defense system includes several important components such as:
• Physical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes that prevent pathogens from entering the body.
• Immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils that engulf and destroy microbes.
• Inflammatory responses that recruit more immune cells to the site of infection.
• Antimicrobial proteins like the complement system that help eliminate pathogens.
Although innate immunity does not create long-term immune memory like adaptive immunity, it plays a critical role in early protection and in activating the adaptive immune response.
