Top Trump administration officials mistakenly disclosed war plans in an encrypted chat group on the Signal messaging app called the "Houthi PC small group" that included a journalist shortly before the United States attacked Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis.
"I didn't believe that this was an actual national security chat. I assumed that I was being spoofed or hoaxed or being included in some kind of disinformation campaign," The Atlantic's Editor-in-Chief, Jeffrey Goldberg said.
Democratic lawmakers swiftly blasted the misstep saying it was a breach of U.S. national security and a violation of law that must be investigated by Congress.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told journalists no one had "texted war plans" and he criticized the journalist involved as "deceitful" accusing him of repeatedly spreading hoaxes.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he was unaware of the incident. "I don't know anything about it. I'm not a big fan of The Atlantic," Trump said.
A chief analyst at CCS Insight, Ben Wood said that "human failure" led to top Trump administration officials mistakenly disclosing war plans in a messaging group.
