In July 2021, a terrifying incident occurred at Sulak Canyon in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Two women were using a popular tourist swing positioned on the edge of a cliff that drops over 6,300 feet. As the swing gained momentum, one of the supporting chains failed, causing the chair to tilt and ejecting both riders over the precipice.
The horrifying moment was captured on video by onlookers who watched the women disappear over the edge of the world’s deepest canyon. Miraculously, both women survived the fall. A small wooden landing platform situated just below the cliff’s edge caught them before they could tumble into the massive gorge.
The victims escaped with only minor scratches and bruises, but the psychological trauma was immense. Following the viral footage, the Russian Ministry of Tourism ordered safety checks on all similar attractions in the region. Many of these unregulated "extreme" swings were found to be in violation of safety codes and were subsequently dismantled to prevent a fatal tragedy.
