Recruiting strategies take into account a number of equal employment opportunity (EEO) and diversity considerations. Diversity is the mix of differences that make a difference.
Recruiting activities are subject to various equal employment laws and regulations. As part of legal compliance in the recruiting process, organizations may work to reduce disparate impact, or underrepresentation of protected-class members compared to the labor markets utilized by the employer.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidelines state that no direct or indirect statements of protected characteristics are permitted in recruiting materials or advertisements. These guidelines affect interviews, advertisements, and other recruiting activities. Some examples of impermissible terminology are young and enthusiastic, Christian values, and journeyman lineman.
Understanding and adapting to those differences that make a difference will dramatically increase the effectiveness of your recruitment.
