This interview with Michael Woldemariam discusses the interlinking crises which contribute to the increasing destabilization of the Horn of Africa region in Eastern Africa, including the 2021 military coup in Sudan, the conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the political repression in Eritrea, and the ways in which African institutions (i.e., African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, etc.) can create the conditions necessary for a proper mechanism to facilitate political transition in these countries.

About the guest:
Michael Woldemariam, PhD, is an associate professor of international relations at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies. He also serves on Boston University’s graduate faculty of Political Science and is a faculty affiliate at the African Studies Center. Dr. Woldemariam’s teaching and research interests are in African security studies, political violence, post-conflict governance, process of institution building, and armed conflict in the Horn of Africa. He has consulted with international organizations, primarily on issues related to politics, governance, and security in Eastern Africa.

Dr. Woldemariam's publications include written works from journals such as Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Terrorism and Political Violence, Journal of Strategic Studies, and the Journal of Eastern African Studies.
