A St. Simons Island dentist is on trial for murder after prosecutors say she shot her boyfriend through a locked bedroom door at their Lake Lanier home.
Suzanne Mericle, 62, faces seven charges including malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and tampering with evidence. If convicted, she faces life in prison plus mandatory consecutive years.
The state claims Mericle and 68-year-old James David Barron argued on the night of March 8, 2025. Barron retreated to an upstairs bedroom and locked himself inside. Prosecutors allege Mericle retrieved a firearm and shot through the closed door, fatally striking him. Investigators later found ammunition and shell casings from two different guns flushed into the home's sewage lines.
The defense says Mericle acted in self-defense. At the scene, she told officers Barron had a gun and was going to shoot her. She also said she was trying to shoot the lock off the door and the bullet must have hit him. A major pretrial fight centered on whether her statements should be suppressed after an investigator told her she didn't need a lawyer before getting her to sign a Miranda waiver.
This case raises real questions about self-defense when the person you claim threatened you was behind a locked door, about Miranda protections and what happens when an officer gives you legal advice during an interrogation, and about what evidence tampering looks like when ammunition turns up in the plumbing.
