This technique could allow clinicians to plan additional preventative pain medication during surgery for vulnerable patients. This could mean patients are likely to experience less acute pain during recovery, and are also less likely to go on to suffer chronic symptoms.

In a pilot study in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (published on 6 April 2022), a team of researchers showed how electroencephalography (EEG) can be used to measure brain activity in patients about to undergo chest surgery, or thoracotomy.

Before surgery, the team measured the patients’ alpha waves - brain signals which oscillate between 8 and 14 Hz. Then, over 72 hours following surgery, patients were asked to score their pain on a scale from 1-10. The researchers were able to demonstrate a clear link between the patient’s alpha waves and their responses to pain. In particular, they found that people whose alpha waves oscillated below 9 Hz were much more vulnerable to severe pain post-surgery.

Alpha waves affect the brain's function in the awake condition. When we relax with our eyes closed, we produce a certain amount of Alpha waves. However, once we start concentrating / thinking, Alpha waves are blocked or reduced in amplitude. Likewise, if you get drowsy, Alpha activity will also drop down. Thus, in order to stay in the high Alpha state, you must keep a certain balance between drowsiness and alertness in the middle of the brainwave spectrum. Alpha waves represent a door between the outer and the inner world - between the unconscious and the conscious mind.

As mentioned, alpha waves fall in the middle of the brain wave spectrum.

Your brain produces these waves when you’re not focusing too hard on anything in particular. Whatever you’re doing, you’re probably feeling relatively calm and relaxed. These waves measure at 11 Hz. An improvement in memory function is a common side effect of listening to Alpha Waves.
