France in Turmoil: Massive Student Protests, Riots and Curfews | Paris | News9

France is witnessing severe civil unrest as a targeted student movement over deteriorating secondary schools and acute teacher shortages has expanded into widespread nationwide demonstrations against the rising cost of living and government spending cuts. Over half a million people joined rallies across major cities including Paris, Lyon, Lille, and Marseille. While most citizens demonstrated peacefully, violent clashes erupted on the fringes, resulting in looted boutiques, arson, hundreds of injuries to law enforcement personnel, and more than 2,500 arrests.

Student representatives have highlighted severe classroom deficits, food insecurity, and housing shortages among young people as the core triggers of the discontent. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced localized night curfews across high-risk prefectures to quell street violence without declaring a national state of emergency. Central authorities are also cracking down on the online resale of looted goods. The crisis unfolds against a tense political landscape, with political parties and opposition figures positioning themselves ahead of the upcoming presidential elections as the government seeks negotiations with national trade unions and parliamentary leaders.
