Preparations in full swing to bring Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel into operation from Shrawan
Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel, under construction at the western entrance of Kathmandu Valley, has reached its final stage with the aim of bringing it into operation from Shrawan.
Construction work in final stage
According to project officials, the main structure of the tunnel, inner concrete lining, ventilation system, electrical connection, security system, road blacktop, etc. have been almost completed. Currently, testing, evaluation of safety standards and adjustment of equipment are being carried out inside the tunnel.
This project, which includes a main tunnel about 2.7 kilometers long and a parallel tunnel built for emergency rescue, is the first modern road tunnel in Nepal. It uses cutting-edge technology, which will automatically control the air, light, temperature and security management inside the tunnel.
Target to operate with testing from Shrawan
The project plans to partially put it into operation from the upcoming Shrawan. The tunnel will undergo a trial period before it is fully operational, where vehicular movement, emergency management, traffic flow, etc. will be tested.
According to officials, if all the tests are successful, the tunnel will be fully opened to the public.
Both travel time and risk will be reduced
Currently, entering Kathmandu via Nagdhunga Pass takes about an hour or more, mainly due to traffic jams, uphill roads and bad weather. However, once the tunnel is operational, it is estimated that this distance will be covered in 5-10 minutes.
This will not only reduce travel time, but also significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Nagdhunga's winding, steep and narrow roads have been a source of suffering for travelers for years.
