Sounds taught to children in Reception during the first half of the autumn term.

Many primary schools across the UK have now adopted the Little Wandle Letters & Sounds revised scheme in their phonics teaching. The aim of this video is to show how sounds are taught to children in Reception during the first half of the autumn term, so parents can better support their children at home.

The following letters are included in this video: u, r, h, b, f, l

Each letter comes with two phrases:

Pronunciation Phrase: How to sound out the letter
Formation Phrase: How to write the letter

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘u’: Open your mouth wide and say u u u

Formation Phrase ‘u’: Down and around the umbrella, and back to the ground.

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘r’: Show me your teeth to make rrrrr sound rrrrr rrrrr

Formation Phrase ‘r’: From the cloud to the ground and over the rainbow.

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘h’: Open your mouth and breathe out sharply h h h

Formation Phrase ‘h’: Down, up and over the helicopter.

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘b’: Put your lips together and say b as you open them b b b

Formation Phrase ‘b’: Down the bear’s back, up and round its tummy.

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘f’: Open your lips a little; put your teeth on your bottom lip and push the air out to make the sound ffff fffff

Formation Phrase ‘f’: Down the flamingo to its foot and across its wings.

Pronunciation Phrase for ‘l’: Open your mouth a little; put your tongue up to the top of your mouth, behind your teeth, and press lllll lllll

Formation Phrase ‘l’: Down the lollipop stick.
