Gravel roads across Michigan are facing the same seasonal challenge: freeze–thaw conditions.
When frost is coming out of the ground, moisture can’t drain properly. That leaves roads soft, muddy and unstable. Operating heavy grading equipment too early can further damage the roadway, and adding new gravel on a partially frozen base won’t compact properly and may delay drying. Both can set road conditions back weeks.
Warmer temperatures and lower precipitation are needed for roads to dry and stabilize. Once the base fully thaws, crews can properly reshape and compact the surface for longer-lasting performance.
In this joint message, the Kent County Road Commission and Ottawa County Road Commission explain why timing matters and what crews are doing while waiting for an improved forecast.
