Bang Saen Beach, known locally as Hat Bang Saen, lies in Chonburi province, eastern Thailand, just about 14 kilometers from Chonburi city and roughly 100 kilometers east of Bangkok. This makes it one of the most accessible coastal spots for a quick escape from the capital, often drawing weekend crowds of Thai families and day-trippers rather than large numbers of international tourists.
The name Bang Saen originates from a poignant piece of local folklore involving two young lovers from Chonburi named Saen and Sam Muk. According to the legend, their love was unrequited or forbidden, leading them to tragically throw themselves off a cliff into the sea together in despair.
Their story gave rise to several place names in the area, including the nearby Khao Sam Muk hill, which features a shrine dedicated to the tale, and the beach itself carries the enduring echo of this romantic yet sorrowful narrative.
Historically, Bang Saen began as a modest fishing village along the Gulf of Thailand. Its transformation into a popular destination started in the early 1940s during the government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram amid World War II. In 1943, authorities constructed Thailand’s first public seaside holiday resort here, complete with bungalows, roads, and other facilities, while also improving connectivity through the development of Sukhumvit Road (Highway 3).
This initiative, alongside a similar resort at Bang Pu in Samut Prakan, aimed to promote domestic tourism and leisure along the eastern coast. Over time, the beach gained fame as a beloved getaway, sometimes affectionately called a place for those seeking solace or joy by the sea.
Today, Bang Saen Beach stretches approximately 2.5 kilometers of sandy shoreline, maintained by the Saen Suk town municipality, with a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Palm trees line the promenade, where visitors rent deck chairs, umbrellas, and inner tubes for swimming, or enjoy banana boat rides and fresh seafood from vendors.
The calm, shallow waters suit families, though the beach can become bustling with umbrellas, stalls, and activities on weekends and holidays, clearing out more peacefully midweek for strolls, jogging, or sunset views.
Nearby attractions include the rocky outcrop of Laem Thaen to the north and the quieter Wonnapha Beach section to the south, blending natural beauty with local charm.
