This isn’t just another fine European shotgun—it’s a masterpiece from H. Scherping, the Royal Gunmaker to Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last Emperor of Prussia. While Scherping built over 1,000 guns for the Kaiser and his son, Crown Prince Friedrich-Wilhelm, most were standardized pieces given as diplomatic gifts.
But this shotgun is different. Its custom dimensions and bespoke craftsmanship prove it was made for a single client, not part of the royal gift runs. From its elegant English grip and slender splinter forend to its dual triggers offering immediate choice of chokes, every detail was tailored for precision and versatility.
The artistry is equally stunning. The receiver carries hand-chiseled scroll engraving in the classic pre-war German style, a design language influenced by French rococo yet distinctly German, with its own stylized leaves and hunting scenes. Even though the stock was replaced, the new walnut is of the highest grade, its dramatic grain complementing the period metalwork in perfect harmony.
Guns like this embody more than fine mechanics—they’re living artifacts of European history. They reflect a time when sporting arms were as much about status, diplomacy, and artistry as they were about performance in the field.
