On D-Day, June 6, 1944, 225 elite U.S. Army Rangers were tasked with one of the most dangerous missions of the entire invasion: scaling 100-foot cliffs at Pointe du Hoc under relentless German fire to destroy six massive artillery guns that could obliterate Allied landing forces on Omaha Beach.
After brutal losses during the climb, the Rangers stormed the fortified positions—only to discover a shocking truth: the bunkers were empty. Allied intelligence had been wrong. The guns had been moved.
As the main Ranger force secured the cliff top and fought off German counterattacks, Sergeants Leonard Lomell and Jack Kuhn pushed inland on patrol. About a mile away, in an unguarded apple orchard, they found all six artillery guns fully intact and ready to fire.
With no demolition charges left, Lomell and Kuhn used thermite grenades to destroy the guns’ firing mechanisms, rendering them useless and potentially saving thousands of Allied lives. Meanwhile, the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc held their ground for two days, suffering over 60% casualties, while waiting for relief from Omaha Beach.
The mission succeeded—but not the way it was planned. Two Rangers with grenades completed a mission 225 men had been sent to do, after discovering it was built on faulty intelligence.
This is one of the most incredible and underappreciated stories of D-Day.
