Clonal Raider Ants - Ooceraea Biroi | Species Spotlight

Описание: Ooceraea Biroi previously known as Cerapachys Biroi, from the Greek keras [κέρας], meaning something made of horn material and pachys [παχυς] meaning thick. They are very small, about 2 mm long, but relatively stocky, heavily armored, with short and thick antennae, with small colonies, typically consisting of a few hundred workers. They can be found distributed India, Nepal, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and China. This is one of the few ant species capable of reproducing by parthenogenesis, which means that, the ants reproduce asexually, in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization. We know that males originate from unfertilized eggs (asexual reproduction) and this is a normal part of insect reproduction strategy, but asexual reproduction of females is extremely rare in ant species. In ants, parthenogenesis has been unambiguously demonstrated in seven species only:

Cataglyphis cursor (Cagniant, 1973);
Pristomyrmex pungens (Itow et al, 1984);
Ooceraea biroi (Tsuji and Yamauchi, 1995);
Platythyrea punctata (Heinze and Hölldobler, 1995; Schilder et al, 1999);
Messor capitatus (Grasso et al, 2000);
Mycocepurus smithii (Kellner et al, 2013);
Wasmannia auropunctata (Fournier et al, 2005).

This is the only of two species (Ooceraea biroi and Mycocepurus smithii) which reproduces exclusively (obligatorily) by parthenogenesis, while all the others mentioned on the list above reproduce by combining both sexual and asexually strategies.
