US-Owned Tanker SafeSea Vishnu, Zefyros Hit in Suspected Persian Gulf Attack; Iraq Rescues 38 Crew

Описание: Two foreign oil tankers caught fire in the Persian Gulf after a suspected attack in Iraq’s territorial waters, prompting a major rescue operation. Iraqi authorities confirmed that 38 crew members were safely rescued from the vessels, though at least one person has died in the incident.

Farhan al-Fartousi, Director General of the Iraqi Ports Company, said the rescued crew members were all foreign nationals. However, officials have not yet disclosed their nationalities or provided detailed information about possible injuries.

According to initial reports, explosions struck the tankers while they were anchored close to each other in the Persian Gulf. Footage verified by CNN shows both ships engulfed in flames, with fire spreading across the surrounding water, likely due to an oil spill.

The vessels involved in the incident are the Maltese-flagged Zefyros and the Marshallese-flagged Safesea Vishnu. The Safesea Vishnu is owned by the US-based company Safesea Transport Inc., while the Zefyros is owned by a company based in Greece.

Reuters reported that Iraqi security officials suspect explosive-laden Iranian boats may have carried out the attack. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosions.
