Описание: This presentation reviews recent research undertaken at ExxonMobil Research Qatar focusing on the links between arid depositional environments and dolomite formation. This research was undertaken in collaboration with Stephen Kaczmarek and his research group at Western Michigan University, and has been published. There are two main takeaways. First, the long-recognized association between arid depositional environments and dolomite is best explained as a preservation bias. Second, acidification of warm seawater best explains the occurrence of platform dolomites in the Zagros Basin during the Cenozoic. Ocean acidification as a driver for platform dolomitization has been previously acknowledged, and is broadly consistent with laboratory synthesis experiments, modern systems observations, as well as observations regarding many older platform dolomite replacement events of the Phanerozoic.
