Biochemist Wojciech Pokrzywa (PhD) from the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, Poland, spoke at the Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) on August 22 about his latest research findings in the field of protein metabolism.

The Pokrzywa’s lab focuses on gaining a fundamental understanding of how protein quality control activities are regulated in both time and space, using cell culture systems and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism.

In his talk at the FLI, Wojciech Pokrzywa (PhD) will discuss the regulation of the E3 ubiquitin ligase CHIP. Ligases are enzymes that can link two molecules through a covalent bond. CHIP is a chaperone-dependent E3 ligase that ubiquitinates unfolded proteins, i.e. binds a ubiquitin protein to a target protein. Chaperones are proteins that assist newly synthesized proteins in folding correctly. Pokrzywa (PhD) will also explain the critical role of CHIP in maintaining protein homeostasis by linking the chaperone system to the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Furthermore, the head of the Protein Metabolism Laboratory will present his research group's findings on the molecular mechanisms that control CHIP activity, including its interactions with other ligases and chaperones, as well as its influence on metabolic cycles and cellular stress responses.

Finally, Pokrzywa (PhD) will introduce the innovative tool Degronopedia. This is a web server developed for the discovery and analysis of degrons.

Through his presentation, Wojciech Pokrzywa (PhD) aims to elucidate the contribution of his research group to a better understanding of protein degradation signaling and the complex regulatory networks that control protein stability and degradation.
