Our visit to the historic English City of St Albans

Описание: A trip to the historic city of St Albans in Hertfordshire, just 20 miles from London! Join us as we explore this fascinating English city, one of only 76 in the UK.

Our day centres around the magnificent St Albans Cathedral, a Norman masterpiece with Anglo-Saxon roots dating back to 793! We delve into its incredible history, from its stained glass windows spanning centuries to the shrines of St Alban, Britain's first saint, and St Amphibalus. Discover the intriguing stories and hidden details within its ancient walls, including some surprising graffiti!

But St Albans is more than just its Cathedral. We wander through the city, discovering its eclectic architecture, from the 17th-century Anthropologie building to the medieval Clock Tower – the only remaining town belfry of its kind in England. We also find the poignant Verdun Tree, a memorial from WWI.

We take a peek at the historic Town Hall (1826) and learn about St Albans' journey to city status in 1877. We even pop into Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, a pub claiming to be one of England's oldest!

Our exploration continues to Verulamium Park, site of the Roman settlement. We see remnants of the Roman walls and a beautifully preserved hypocaust and mosaic. While time didn't allow for a visit to the Verulamium Museum this time, we soak in the atmosphere of this historically rich location.

Interestingly, St Albans' character has made it a popular filming location for movies like Wonka and Tomorrow Never Dies, and TV shows like Foyle's War and Inspector Morse.

Finally, we admire the Art Deco charm of the Odyssey cinema before heading home, reflecting on the elegance and enduring history of St Albans.
