Of the many themes that have come forth from the Vatican II, there were two of great importances. First, is the theme of the People of God and, secondly, the theme of full and active participation of all the faithful. It is in that teaching vein that we begin to reassess what is means for active participation in the faithful by examining the role of each member of the assembly and the way in which their membership finds itself in full and active participation at the table of the Lord.

We received the Roman Missal Third Edition in Advent 2011. Since that time we have studied its companion resource, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. It asks us to systematically expand our understanding of roles, functions, and actions as they relate to the liturgy.
The full altar will be utilized during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The chalices and patens will be placed expansively across the altar. The Presider will receive, from the assembly, a large paten filled with enough bread so that all members of the assembly will be able to receive from hosts that are consecrated at the Mass at which they worship. The large paten and large chalice will be placed on the altar in a singular way to focus the words of the presiding priest in a manner that helps the assembly see the symbols of bread and wine more boldly and see them more amply as the smaller patens and chalices are placed at the corners of the altar.

At the beginning of the Lamb of God, two empty patens will be brought from the Credence Table by Acolytes or Altar Servers and placed on the corporal on the altar. The priest or deacon will then fill the empty patens with the bread from the large paten in a way that represents the breaking of the bread This is called the Fractioning Rite. After bread has been distributed into the two empty patens, the larger paten is moved to the side and the Communion Rite continues. During this time, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion approach the bottom step of the altar.
After the priest receives his communion, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion approach the altar and stand in the sanctuary, in semi-circle, behind the Presider. The Presider will then distribute Holy Communion to the Extraordinary Ministers.
Once all Extraordinary Ministers have received Holy Communion, they should approach the altar and retrieve their paten or chalice and purificator and make their way to their distribution stations.

Once the first Communion Station line is closed, that Extraordinary Minister should place his or her vessel on the altar and go to the Tabernacle to retrieve the Ciborium (reserved Sacrament). He or she will then place the Ciborium on the altar. The Extraordinary Minister should remain at the altar with the sacrament to provide for supply needs of other communion ministers until the priest or deacon returns to the altar. For all other Extraordinary Ministers whose stations finish, they should return their vessel to the altar, bow and leave.
As each Communion station closes, the Extraordinary Minister should return their vessel to the altar, bow, and leave. Those who are ministers of the cup should consume any remaining Precious Blood at the altar, and then place the vessel on the altar, bow and leave.
Once distribution is complete, the priest or deacon places all remaining Eucharist into the Ciborium. The Extraordinary Minister returns the Ciborium to the Tabernacle. In the Communion Rite, the Faithful will observe that Holy Communion is received from what has been consecrated at each Mass and the tabernacle is seen as a place of reservation.
After Mass please return to the work sacristy to wash the purified vessels.
