Here is my reading of Dostoevsky's novella 'Notes from the Underground' (or 'Notes from Underground'). This is the Constance Garnett translation which, for ease of listening, I have recorded with substitutions for select words/phrases taken from the Randall translation. All written captions in the video are directly from Garnett's translation, and I have signaled any intentional substitutions with the pen & ink icon at the top left of the screen.
In the future I'll refrain from combining translations, to more accurately narrate the specific iteration, but by the time I decided against the idea I had already recorded much of the novella.
I've caught multiple minor mistakes whilst editing, but this is a learning process so am accepting the imperfection.
Notes from the Underground is my favourite of Dostoevsky's texts. It follows the neurotic notes of a disgustingly spiteful, shame-ridden and brooding individual - the Underground Man - and certain events that occurred throughout his life to form him into who he is.
The reason NftU feels so significant for me compared to Dostoevsky's other works is that it is easily the most self-aware of his novels I've read, and serves incredibly well as a sort of litmus test for a person's undesirable qualities. The Underground Man is the opposite of what anyone should want to be as a person, and in being that he is able to guide the reader to reflect on their own similar qualities and take note to course correct. We will all relate, even if to a lesser extent, to at least one personality trait contained within this character. It's imperative not to allow that to simmer or snowball into a full-blown fault within ones psyche; being self-aware will never be enough, taking direct action to lessen these qualities within oneself is necessary to becoming a well-rounded and healthy personality (both for you, as well as those around you).
Like many before and after, he is a character study within literature that holds a mirror to the reader, and that will always be one of the joys (if it could be considered "joy") of any philosophical literature.
I hope you find something of value from the book, or at the very least consider it an interesting work of fiction, if this is your first exposure to the novella c:
