interspecific feeding - The Wildlife Society Interspecific feeding is the act of one animal species feeding the young or offspring of a different species, most commonly observed in birds where adults feed non-brood parasitic young of other species. This can also refer to instances of collaboration in predation, where different species feed on the same food source, such as seabirds and cetaceans hunting together. The causes for this behavior are often not fully understood, but factors like misdirected parental care in response to begging calls, lack of a mate, or opportunistic benefits to the adult can play a role.
Brood parasitism is a form of social parasitism where an organism (the parasite) lays its eggs in the nest of another organism (the host), which then incubates and raises the parasite's young. The host is unaware they are caring for non-offspring, often due to the parasite's eggs resembling the host's in size and color, a tactic known as egg mimicry. This strategy benefits the parasite by allowing it to avoid the energy and time costs of nest building, incubation, and parental care, while placing the burden on the unsuspecting host.
Allofeeding is the act of one individual feeding another within the same species, particularly common in cooperatively breeding birds where parents, siblings, or even unrelated adults provision altricial hatchlings. This behavior also occurs between adult birds as part of courtship, pair-bonding, and female fitness, with males sometimes feeding their mates to demonstrate provisioning abilities. Reasons for allofeeding include strengthening pair bonds, increasing a female's fitness, and demonstrating foraging skills.
