Inspired by - well, it's a long story.
I had a guitar student years ago who had served on an aircraft carrier in World War II. I wrote him a tune. He told me stories of that time and I wrote a tune about one of those stories. That tune is called In Memory Of Joe LaMastro (I didn't know until later that the correct spelling was LoMastro). You can look the tune up here on my youtube channel if you like.
Anyway, a couple of years ago, somebody used that tune as background music for their video on youtube. And that attracted the notice of someone whose father served on the same ship as my friend. He offered to share a photo with me, a photo of Mr. LoMastro. He also told me a story that his father (again, my friend's shipmate) told him. The story was about the Black Gunners - and I quote: "who continued firing at the Kamikaze plane right up to the point of impact. I think that was the day he was freed of the prejudice that society of the day so widely accepted".
So I wrote this tune. It's on my Still On The Line cd from 2014, available at my website (harpguitar.com) and all the usual places. Enjoy!
