This is the story of a single night in Melcombe Regis, on the Dorset coast, when a town watchman witnessed the arrival of a ship that carried more than wool and wine. Through his senses—lantern light, harbor fog, the smell of rosemary and vinegar—we will trace the first subtle signs of plague spreading ashore.
The narrative will draw on Francis Aidan Gasquet’s account of the plague’s arrival in Dorset and the devastation recorded in episcopal registers, and on J. F. C. Hecker’s descriptions of early symptoms and the psychological tremors that preceded full terror. Medieval theories of corrupted air and miasma will shape the townspeople’s understanding of what they breathe but cannot see.
CENTRAL QUESTION
Can a man on watch perceive the turning of history when it arrives without noise?
CHARACTER PROFILE
The Watchman:
A middle-aged man, long accustomed to salt wind and contraband cargo. Literate only enough to recognize seals and tally barrels. Superstitious but practical. He carries a lantern, a short spear, and at his belt a small cloth posy of rosemary and rue against bad air. He believes illness travels in air gone sour. He trusts doors, distance, and God.
