A Brief History of Wat Suthat
Establishment:
King Rama I founded Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworawihan in 1782. It was originally named "Wat Maha Suttawas." The temple was built to enshrine the Phra Sri Sakyamuni (Phra To) Buddha statue, a Sukhothai-era bronze statue from Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai Province.

Renovations:

King Rama II ordered the construction of the Phra Viharn Luang to house the Phra To, but the construction was not completed before his reign ended.
King Rama III completed the Phra Viharn Luang and built the Ubosot, Sala Kan Parian, Satt Maha Sathan
King Rama IV ordered the renovation of the Phra Viharn Luang.
King Rama V ordered the renovation of the Ubosot.

Important features:
Phra Viharn Luang: houses the Phra Sri Sakyamuni (Phra To) Buddha statue
Ubosot: the longest in Thailand, houses the Phra Buddha Trilokachet Buddha statue
Sala Kan Parian: houses the Phra Buddha Setthamuni Buddha statue
Ho Trai: houses the Tripitaka
Sao Ching Chaa (Giant Swing): located in front of the temple, a prominent landmark
