Mattot & Massei – ‘Tribes’ / ‘Journeys’
Numbers 30:1 – 32:42 / 33:1-36:13
Mattot, the first of this double portion, begins with Moses talking to the leaders of each of the twelve tribes, delivering to them the laws regarding vows and oaths, showing the importance and necessity of fulfilling vows made before God.
Then the marching orders to wage war on the Midianites are given, a command to destroy those people who had previously led Israel into sin. After a successful campaign, the soldiers are given the instructions to cleanse themselves and the spoils of war, which are then presented to Moses and divided evenly between the army and the rest of the community. A tithe is taken from both halves of the loot.
Before crossing the Jordan river, the tribes of Reuben and Gad supplicate Moses to allow them to stay on the east side, rather than continue into the Promised Land with the rest of Israel, but Moses, misinterpreting their request, becomes angry. The tribes vow that they will send men to fight with the rest of the tribes for the land after housing their families and livestock in the cities, to which Moses agrees.
Massei begins with a detailed list of the stations of Israel’s journey so far, after which the nation is given the borders of their land and commanded to divide the land proportionally by the size of each tribe, lots being cast to distribute the land fairly between them. Having been given the boundaries, Israel is commanded to give the Levites forty-two cities of their own, plus the six cities of refuge (reaffirming the laws of these cities and referencing those of the ‘goel’ or ‘blood-avenger’).
Finally, Moses is confronted by the elders of the tribe to which Zelophehad belonged (the daughters of whom had, in a previous parsha, been given their deceased father’s portion of land), who were concerned about losing tribal land through inheritance. Thus the daughters are commanded to marry within their tribe to maintain the appointed portions of land.
