Hello! Here's a little tip that popped in my head while working on one of my short stories, that I thought might help others. If it does, or if you have more to add, comment below! This tip of course doesn't cover every way to approach characters in short stories, but I think it's an interesting, simple jumping off point that naturally leads to more detailed ideas.
Fun Fact: I used some of the assets I've been making/texturing (some were acquired from free asset packs) for my game, I Am the Exhale, for the thumbnail. I've been very much enjoying getting back into 3D modeling and sculpting, and hopefully I'll get to share my progress in those areas soon!
