Overwhelm can make the body feel unsafe, tense, or alone. This 4-min guided practice helps you reconnect with a sense of internal safety using 'protective figure visualisation'—imagining a supportive, protective presence that helps your nervous system settle.
This practice is grounded in research from neuroscience, attachment theory, and experiential therapies. Studies show that the brain often responds to vividly imagined supportive figures in ways similar to real supportive relationships. Activating mental representations of safe, caring others can reduce threat responses and increase emotional regulation.
Neuroscience research suggests that experiences of safety activate brain regions involved in emotional regulation, including the prefrontal cortex, while calming threat responses in the amygdala. When the body senses protection and support, the nervous system can shift away from survival states and toward regulation.
This practice can be helpful if you are experiencing:
Overwhelm
Anxiety or stress
Emotional flooding
A sense of isolation or aloneness
You can return to this exercise anytime you need help reconnecting with safety in your body.
