I want to discover more about ancient forms of medicine, you see what we consider medicine is the US, Canada or Europe isn’t very old. This allopathic medicine that we know today is at best 100 years old and it is continually developing. In contrast some of the traditional forms of healing are 1000s of years old and are considered complete, meaning that they just need to be perfected by the practitioner as they are, not changed or tinkered with. The down side is that that to be effective as a traditional healer can take a lifetime to perfect, and in the modern world we don’t have the patience to do that. Also, as clients or patients we don’t have the patience to go through long treatment protocols, we are more of the mindset of ‘just give me a pill and I’ll get back to work.’
However, my practice is filled with people in pain who aren’t helped by modern medicine. These people are looking for something. I'm went to University to become an osteopath. At the time I just wanted to help people recover from injury, and in my youth I'd had great success being treated by an osteopath. I'd also tried physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage but non were, in my opinion, as effective as osteopathy.
What both fascinates me and irritates me about the osteopathic profession is that is was founded by one person, Dr A.T Still. He was a US civil war era doctor who reasoned that manual adjustments would return the body's anatomy back to normal and then the powerful physiological processes will return the body to homeostasis or health.
This idea wasn’t new, in fact most countries have their own bonesetters or healers. In some countries these healers are also the shamans or witch doctors, and in some developed countries that is how osteopathy is still viewed today!
I embrace modern medicine, if my kids are acutely sick I’ve taken them to hospital and I’ve been very grateful of all the help they have received. Personal I’ve had two operations that would have only been possible with the invention of antibiotics and anesthetic…but we, as a culture, and more so as a race, have turned our back on the old ways, in favour of a quick fix. I’m trying to peel back the curtain a little and take a peak at the forms of medicine that are thousands of years old and look at them through my lens of an osteopath and see if there is anything we can learn, essentially my goal is to, “combine ancient wisdom with modern science for a better you”.
In this video I meet Nanay Alice, a traditional Filipino healer or ‘pilot’. She does not advertise and doesn’t ask for a set fee, ‘only what you can’ she says. Yet she tells me that she treats doctors, lawyers, children and security guards from her tiny little shack in the Remedios Circle area of Jorge Bacobo street in Manila.
Hilot is one of the oldest and most secret medical arts in the Philippines, hilot is usually taught by the elderly to the younger generations. Interestingly Nanay wasn’t taught this work, it came to her as a gift form the Virgin Mary. This really interested me as I think there are some people in the world who work out how to manipulate the body back to health themselves, just like Dr A.T Still, and there are those that are taught. The original thinkers to me might show us things that we have never thought of. Her story goes like this, ‘During one of the many Sundays she spent at the church, she noticed a child barely seven months old, coughing profusely. When the infant suddenly vomited, she allegedly heard the voice of the Lady of Remedies.
“Hilutin mo ang bata (Massage the child),” the voice whispered. Without hesitation, she approached the family and offered to massage the child.
The parents were taken aback by the sudden display of concern from the strange woman. It took an hour before the parents came back to Alicia with the ailing child still crying. A few minutes and some oil-laden rubs later, Nanay Alicia asked the parents to go home and make their child rest.
The next Sunday, the family returned to Nanay Alicia’s spot —this time with a cake in hand. The father, who turned out to be a specialist at the Makati Medical Center, couldn’t stop thanking Nanay that day.
Upon retiring from volunteer work in 1996, Nanay Alice started treating people out in the streets through the traditional “hilot” and herbal medicine.
It became easy for her to sense things, especially those of ill nature, whether they be kept secret or made out in the open. She has been practicing for 37 years and this video is my experience with her.
