Avni’s Prayer for String Orchestra is his second work in this series. It was written two years after his 1959 Woodwind Quintet, which we heard in the first concert. But by the time Avni had revised Prayer, in 1969, he was already a significantly more experienced at writing for larger chamber and orchestral ensembles, where his familiarity with contemporary writing styles, including electronic music, was evident. Revising Prayer in 1969, therefore manifested Avni’s departure from the mimetic innocence of national works such as his Woodwind Quintet.
After experimenting with modern techniques and electronic music while setting texts from the Zohar and even reharmonizing Yiddish folksongs in his symphonic works of the late 1960s, Avni's style had consolidated through the reconfiguration of melody types drawn on the musical tradition of Eastern European Jews. Addressing the Eastern Europe Jewish culture was a highly significant moment, as it sought to restore what Zionist culture had marked as abnormal and in need to correction. Avni’s return to these diasporic spaces, to these non-sovereign and non-national territories, rendered them legitimate raw materials for the writing of art music in Israel. By the 1970s he was joined by a number of composers who began opting for other, non-national Jewish cultural options. We will hear more about the repercussions of such turns in the third concert.
